[Book Smarts] Witchycakes 1-3

Witchycakes is a brand new chapter book series for ages 6-9. Just came out last year and there’s already three books new. Can you guess what it’s about? They’re not just a witch, they’re a witch-in-training. And Witchycakes isn’t their bakery, it’s their mom’s. There’s more than just cakes.

If you haven’t already gone out and bought them all yet, let me talk a bit more about why this series is probably going to be a big one.

The Magic

There’s a surprising lack of magic in the modern chapter book space. There’s magical things, sure. Unicorns and dragons and… more unicorns. Too many fairies. Mermaids. There’s a lack of magic users. You’ve got Bea and Mirbs and…that’s about it? Just witches, no wizards. Blue here in Witchycakes is also a witch, but the magic they use is pretty cool.

Not so much the application, that’s cool too, but more the method. No incantations or magic wands, just focusing. Not even spell names, just types of magic and how they apply. Finding magic, soothing magic, helping magic. Are you sensing a theme here?

The Chill

I refuse to use the word “cozy” (I think it’s oversaturated), but boy is this series calm. The credits page shows a scene, the opening spread has another scene and a poem. Every art is in color. Even that rain scene above is cheery. It’s a slice-of-life series about a bakery delivery witch that lives on an island. You can’t get more comfy than that.

The Characters

As you would expect in a series about delivering baked goods, there’s a lot of characters. Junie levels of characters. And they’re all very real and it all very much works and we all know how much I like that kind of characterization here. Who knew that moving from house to house makes everything manageable? There’s only a few characters each scene, then we move on to another scene. The premise really does a ton of heavy-lifting.

Did I mention the clothes? Blue’s wearing a different outfit on every cover. The books have a heavy focus on the seasons, and illustrator Ariane Moreira makes sure the clothes change accordingly. Nice attention to detail.

The End

The end of this post, not the series. Book 4 comes out in October, just in time for a harvest season themed story. Witchycakes even manages to make October relaxing. No spooky Halloween story here.

Have you gone out and bought all the books already? There’s libraries too, you don’t even have to buy them. Go check out Witchycakes. I’ll wait here until next month.
